昨年発表させていただき即完売してしまったJINCUP GOLDENだが、実は発表時に金漆塗装が間に合ったものは全体の半分の15個だけだった。
滝山くんと一緒に残りの15個を昨年仕上げていたのだが、僕らはお互いに忙しく、なかなかリリースできずにいた。
普段の仕事や、シンガポールでの新しい仕事を忙しくこなす滝山くんと、来月のNYでの個展を控えた僕らの間でどんな形でリリースするのかを決めかねていました。
当初、NYに全て持って行く予定だったのですが、僕らのホームである日本を含む東アジアからのお問合せがとても多いため、一部を僕らのウェブサイトで販売させていただくことに決めました。残りはNYでの個展に持っていきます。（一緒に行こうよ！）

Story of jincup production
Thanks to the many orders we received, we made a production schedule for about six months.
It was scorching hot on sunny days.
Water leaked when it rained.
In this environment, I worked hard with my colleagues.
We made hundreds of JIN cups in advance and sent them to Mr. Takiyama, a lacquer craftsman.
In the meantime, I made the rest of jincups while I was waiting for the lacquer to be finished.
But I had a call from Mr.Takiyama saying, "Emergency! Dozens of JIN cups have stains!"
Mr.Takiyama brought it to me in a hurry, but he couldn't figure out the cause.
We thought "It might be a stain from a rain leak."
So we tried to verify if that theory is correct.
We applied leaking rainwater that ran down the steel frame of the workshop to the wood and dried it and applied lacquer.
It turned out to be a beautiful stain!
The leaking water contained iron and the tannin in the urushi lacquer reacted with it.
I was aware of this.
There were a few pieces that had been hit by leaking water during production, but they became invisible when they dried, so I finished them and gave them to Mr. Takiyama without paying attention to them.

"I made second-rate pieces..."
I uploaded a story on Instagram and then I received about 50 messages in 30 minutes, most of them asked me to sell them.
I was very grateful for the messages, but I politely said no.
I didn't want to lower the value of what we had all worked so hard on by selling it as a second-grade product.
I felt that if I did that, I would lower the value of my colleagues, including the lacquer craftsman, Mr. Takiyama.
We all discussed the situation and we decided to customize it to a high-end product.
I knew a perfect lacquer for this.

There is a profession called "Urushi material shop".
"Kin-urushi(Golden lacquer)" is a new product developed by them.
This Kin-Urushi is a new technology of the 21st century which defied conventional wisdom.
Since it is made with such a novel idea, you can imagine that there are some controversial opinions among lacquer craftsmen who respect tradition.
However, we decided to use this Urushi lacquer because it fits the philosophy of jincup Urushi, which is "the challenge to create a new culture".
But the deadline for delivery was close, so we decided to deliver the less damaged pieces and entrusted some of them to Mr. Takiyama for customization.
When I asked him about the delivery date, worried about their schedule as first-class craftsmen of Buddhist altars, he said with a big smile, "We will be able to deliver at the beginning of the new year."

"Hello, this is Takiyama. I've finished half of it, so I'll bring it to you."
On that day, I stopped my hand of making works for another project and was having a coffee break at 3 o'clock, then they arrived.
Of course, I brewed one for Mr. Takiyama as well.
"Beautiful."
I clearly felt the traces of "hands work" that worked with materials for the first time through trial and error.
We took them out of the box and enjoyed coffee while gazed at them.

2021年のjincup制作のお話
おかげさまで沢山のオーダーをいただいていたので、半年くらいの制作予定を立てた。
晴れたら灼熱
雨が降れば雨漏り
この中で仲間達と共に汗水たらして働いた。
先行で数百個を作り、漆職人の滝山くんへ預けた。
その間に残りのjincupを作りながら漆が仕上がるのを待っていたわけだが、
「もしもし滝山です。数十個にシミが出てしまいました！」
という電話をもらった
慌ててそれを持ってきた滝山くんにも原因がわからないのだという
そこで僕らは
「雨漏りのシミではないか」
という仮説を立てたてて検証してみた。

木につけてから乾かし漆を塗ってみる
すると見事にシミになったのだ
雨漏りの水が鉄分を含んでいたので
それと漆のタンニンが反応したのだろう
確かに自覚がある
製作中に雨漏りに打たれたものがあったが、乾くと見えなくなり、気にせず仕上げて滝山くんへ預けてしまっていたのだ。

「B品ができてしまったー」
というInstagramのストーリーズをUPすると、30分で50件くらいのメッセージが届き、そのほとんどが
「売ってください」というものだった
大変ありがたいメッセージだったが、丁重にお断りさせていただいた
皆で一生懸命作ったものをB級品として販売して価値を下げたくなかった
僕がそれをやってしまうと、漆職人の滝山くん含む仲間達の価値を下げてしまう気がした
皆であーだこーだ話し合い
「これをカスタムアップして高級品にする」
という方向性で行くことにした
それにピッタリの漆がある

「漆の材料屋さん」という職種がある
「金漆」は彼らが開発した新作だ
今までの常識では考えられないこの金漆は、21世紀の新技術なのだ。
あまりにも斬新な発想で作られているため、伝統を重んじる漆職人さんの中では賛否両論あろうことは想像できるが
「新しい文化を作る挑戦」
というjincup漆の哲学にピッタリなのでこの漆を採用することにした。
ただ、どうしても納品が迫っていたので被害の少ないものは修正して納品分に回し、一部をカスタムアップするために滝山くんへ託すことになった
一流の仏壇職人である彼らのスケジュールを心配して納期を訪ねると
彼は満面の笑みでこう言ってくれた
「年明けに納品できそうです」

「もしもし滝山です。半分は仕上がったので持っていきます」
別件の蓋物を作っていた手を止めて3時のコーヒーを飲んでいると、それらはやってきた
もちろん滝山くんの分も淹れてある
「美しい」
はじめての素材を試行錯誤しながら作業した「手」の跡がはっきりと感じられる
段ボールの箱から取り出されたそれらをうっとりと眺めながら皆でコーヒーを飲んだ
